Residential Neuro-rehab

The Raphael Medical Centre's main Residential Neuro-Rehab site is at Swanborough House. This is a 31 bedded residential rehabilitation unit for adults with acquired brain injuries. Referrals are accepted from Local Authorities, Hospitals and Primary Care Trusts.

Swanborough House has a philosophy of care based on anthroposophy, the work of Rudolf Steiner. Everyone is treated as a unique individual and in a holistic manner.

Our residents have a structured programme of care, promoting empowerment and autonomy. Their programmes include all their physical, social, spiritual and psychological needs.

A pre-admission detailed assessment is carried out to identify individual needs. This includes activities of daily living skills, cognitive and executive functioning, insight and awareness into injury and risk management. On admission a care plan is jointly formulated with the resident and their goals set.

Swanborough House offers many therapies and activities. These include:

  • Art Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Music Therapy
  • Drama Therapy
  • External Applications Therapies
  • Physiotherapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • and we also have a visiting Masseur.

Group sessions are offered in:

  • Current affairs
  • Concept skills
  • Computer skills
  • Gardening
  • Poetry
  • Music appreciation
  • Memory
  • Music reminiscence
  • Budgeting
  • Reading & Writing.

Community services also offer educational programmes.

Resident's views are sought through questionnaires and 3 weekly meetings.

Our belief is that discharge planning begins on admission, although we also accept that for some, they may require 24 hour care for the rest of their lives.

We now offer an Outreach service called Swanborough Services. We continue to support people within their own homes following discharge.
